Joshua 1:7-8 • The Word
Joshua 1:7-8
Strength and Courage
Moses had been God’s mouthpiece to his people. After his death, the people would have no doubt been a bit shaken, scared, and confused. What now? They were approaching the promised land - new, unknown, but already inhabited by other nations. How would they know where to go, what to do, or where to turn? How would they hear from the Lord?
God’s response? Be strong and very courageous to keep doing what Moses said.
Why would observing Moses’ instructions carefully require strength and bravery - both in his absence and at the edge of the promised land?
What would be difficult and scary?
Likewise, have you ever thought trying to live out the bible’s commands is hard and nerve-wracking?
Why? Which part(s) in particular?
If you have a story in which you was strong and courageous, share it!
What was at stake?
What gave you the strength to do it?
How did it turn out?
Read Joshua 1:9. How is that encouraging?
Day and Night
God also hits on the totality of his words to Moses. His whole instruction was important all the time, and it was to be on their minds day and night so they didn’t miss anything.
What does God say will happen if they do that?
What did success look like for them?
What does “success” look like for those of us in Christ?
What’s God trying to get across when he says not to let his instruction “depart from your mouth,” to “meditate on it,” and to “carefully observe everything” it says?
Practically speaking…
…what’s it look like to meditate on God’s Word throughout the day?
…are you only supposed to quote bible verses? How do you not let his Word depart from your mouth?
…how can you make sure you’re observing God’s Word in the day-to-day stuff of life without being overwhelmed?
