John 16:25-33 | Food for Thought

Notes

  • This is part of Jesus’ Farewell Discourse, in which he’s preparing his disciples for his imminent departure - to the cross, to the grave, and to his throne in heaven.

Questions

  • Jesus makes it clear that “asking in Jesus name” doesn’t mean that Jesus is going to speak to the Father on our behalf. What point is Jesus trying to make here?

    • How are knowing more about the Father and relating with the Father linked in Jesus’ words here?

    • How does this highlight the reconciling purposes of Jesus being our mediator? What does he need to stand in our place for? What do we not have to “hide behind Jesus” for?

  • The disciples recognize that Jesus is speaking a little more clearly now, and yet they overestimate how much they really understand. What is Jesus’ response to them?

    • How is this passage a good reminder to stay humble as we learn more about the Lord?

    • How is this passage also an exciting encouragement to continue learning?

  • Despite his coming abandonment by the disciples, Jesus anchors himself with the nearness of the Father. How does this model a truth for those of us in Christ who might find ourselves betrayed and left behind by others?

    • How is it comforting to know that the Lord’s work will continue - and conquer! - despite our faithlessness?

    • In what ways has Jesus conquered the world?

    • What does it mean for us to live with peace in Christ despite the trouble of the world?
