John 14:15-31 | Food for Thought

Notes

  • This is part of Jesus’ Farewell Discourse, in which he’s preparing his disciples for his imminent departure - to the cross, to the grave, and to his throne in heaven.

Questions

  • Jesus makes it a point that anyone who loves him will also obey him. What’s the relationship between love and obedience? Why would loving someone - especially Jesus - mean that we would trust and do what they say?

    • What does it mean when we DON’T obey Jesus? Does that mean that we don’t love him anymore?

  • Jesus also mentions some things that those who love Jesus get to enjoy. What are some of those things?

    • What’s it look like to be loved by the Father? It’s one thing to say it’s true; it’s another to experience that in some way that makes a difference!

    • What’s it mean that Jesus will manifest (or reveal) himself only to those who love him?

    • When you think of the Father and Son coming to make their home with us, what do you envision? What does that mean?

  • Jesus bookends this passage by talking about the Holy Spirit. What’s his role in Jesus’ absence?

    • Does the Spirit take the role with YOU? Why or why not? What does that look like?

  • Jesus says that we should be happy that he’s not here with us, but rather with the Father. Why?

    • How does Jesus’ departure actually ADVANCE the redemption story of the gospel?
