Ecclesiastes 5:8-20

Book Overview

WHAT TIME IS IT?

  • Have you ever received something that just never lived up to the hype? Maybe you wanted something for a long time, saved up for it, read every news article about it, and/or looked for it everywhere because it was hard to find… only to be underwhelmed after you got it?

    • What was it? Why was it such a bummer? What did you think it would do for your life?

    • Is there something you’re looking forward to in that same way now?

  • What does this passage say about those who are already “the haves” (instead of the “have-nots”) in life?

    • What should (or shouldn’t!) surprise us?

    • What does “having” actually do for them?

    • How is your flesh tempted to sit in judgment and jealousy over people like that? Does your pride think it would be different with you? …that you would be better or do better?

  • What are the tragedies that The Teacher describes? Put them in your own words.

    • What makes these scenarios particularly tragic?

    • So what does he say is good for people to do instead?

      • Does that solve / avoid the tragedy? Why or why not?

  • Consider the three things he mentions at the end of the passage: rewards of your toil; labor you rejoice in; and joy that occupies your heart. Reflect on them:

  • Would you say you have those things?

  • How easy is it for you to experience them?

  • What would you have to have in order for you to stop considering your days and simply be occupied by joy?

    • How does the gospel speak to what it is you want or need in order to do that?

    • How can the promises of Jesus help us live freely, generously, and joyfully in an even greater way than The Teacher even knows?
