What Is Baptism?
Baptism is an outward representation of an inward transformation. If you’ve trusted Jesus to save you from sin and give you life and peace with God forever, then you’re a new creation in Christ (2 Corinthians 5:17)!
We baptize by immersion. That means the people we baptize are completely submerged in water before coming back up. Going underwater is a symbol that you’re now united to Jesus’ life, death, and burial. Rising up out of the water is a symbol that Jesus’ resurrection is now also your own. The Apostle Paul puts it this way in his letter to the Romans:
Do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? We were buried therefore with him by baptism into death, in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might walk in newness of life.
For if we have been united with him in a death like his, we shall certainly be united with him in a resurrection like his.
Romans 6:3-5
